2019 Travel Goals

I am still figuring out what this year will look like in terms of travel – but I still have some big aspirations. Going somewhere new (or familiar) is all what you make of it. For instance, the next few weeks you can find me all over Pinterest putting together the perfect Savannah weekend. Even planning a trip a few hours away quenches that thirst I have for exploring.

I was unsure if I would list all my travel goals and longings, but I figure this will keep me accountable and focused when planning my trips. There is nothing wrong with dreaming too big when it comes to seeing new corners of this world.

My 2019 Travel Goals: Environmentally friendly travel

This year is not only about where I fly or drive to, but also the decisions I make when I am there. I have been inspired lately by my friend over at the Wandering Suitcase and her intention to be mindful of the environment when traveling. She has a great post all about how our travel can have a negative impact on the environment and has started to change the way she travels. I need to improve on this as well.

Ignorance may be bliss, but not when it is at the expense of our oceans being polluted with plastic cups and grocery store bags. Did you know that 91% of plastic is not recycled? Over the years billions of plastic has been produced, and it just sits in our oceans and landfills. We may no see it, but a large floating trash heap named “the Great Pacific Garbage Patch” drifts in our ocean, with all our to-go coffee cups and fast food straws.

To be honest, the environment was never a top cause I focused on. Refugee resettlement and access to education yes, but environmental issues were always further down the list. When I cut up my 6-pack plastic rings I feel like I have saved 10 dolphins but in realty I haven’t done a good job protecting our environment.

How amazing would it be if travel bloggers everywhere led the example of less waste travel habits? How we treat this earth, especially when traveling really does matter.

So, I thought to myself – what habits can I change that would have a positive impact on the environment while traveling? What small steps can I make in 2019?

Steps to take:

/ Always bring and use my hydroflask – no plastic bottles.

/ Place my shoes in clothe bags – not plastic.

/ Limit straw usage.

/ Bring cloth bags for shopping (everyday and in travel).

/ Eco-friendly toiletries – Thanks to other blogs, this was brought to my attention. One use disposable toothbrushes, wet wipes etc. all can do damage.

My 2019 Travel Goals: Ethical/local inspired shopping

Instead of hopping into the nearest tourist shop, I hope this year to buy from more locally-owned boutiques and stores. Whether that means visiting the city’s farmers market or helping support a local business. No matter where I choose to spend my money, I hope to purchase from a place that prides themselves in ethically made goods. This goal may be hard, but excited to challenge myself.

My 2019 Travel Goals: Locations

My aspiring list of places! Constantly envisioning new trips is something I love to do.  Its never too early to plan, and always prepare for spontaneity. But for now, let me dream about all the places I want to see this year.

/ Spend a weekend in Savannah, GA

/ Visit Toronto

/ Iceland (My biggest travel goal for years now, hoping this year is it)! My favorite band (Sigur Ros) is from Iceland, and my dream although popular now, is to swim in the Blue Lagoon.

/ Overnight trip to St. Augustine, FL

/ Spend a weekend in Tampa, FL

/ Puerto Rico

/ Carentenga, Colombia

/ Columbus, OH

/ Overnight on Amelia Island

/ Staycation in Jacksonville, FL

/ Weekend on St. Simons Island, GA

/ Visit some new Florida national parks!

/ A few days of Rhody summer (of course)

/ Travel somewhere to see Fall leaves (going to DC in October)!

/ Wilmington, NC (big One Tree Hill fan over here)

If you have been to any of these places or hope to in 2019, or share similar goals mentioned above, leave a comment below or message me on Instagram!

Love always,

Katherine
