A small downtown lends itself to being manageable and also perfect for kids. Of course, I think most cities are awesome for little ones, and downtown Jacksonville with kids is no exception. I Hope this list gives you some ideas if you need a morning or afternoon adventure in the city keeping your kids busy (you will love it, too).
Main St. Library
One of my favorite places to bring our toddler! They have a reading time every Tuesday and Saturday which is fantastic. The library always has crayons and coloring, a sunny-filled room with kids toys, a mini puppet theater and not too far outside is a fun fountain to run around.
James Weldon Johnson Park
Across from the main Library is a park with food trucks, music tables and chairs. A fun spot for some food and getting their energy out.
St. Pete’s Candy Shop
Willy Wonka meets Alice in Wonderland? Packed with candy, color and some arcade games, St. Pete’s is fun to explore on it’s own or see what classes they have for a more scheduled visit. You can sign up for story time that includes a story, a treat and a craft. They also have times you can meet the character of books that could be fun!
Chamblin’s Uptown
Grab a treat and coffee (parent fuel) and check out all the wonderful used books. Chamblin is a staple downtown and a great spot to start your morning in Downtown Jax. Peruse the children’s section on the first floor and support local while you’re there.
Jacksonville Skyway (Monorail)
After enjoying some time at James Weldon Johnson Park, hop on the station located there and ride the Jacksonville Skyway to San Marco Station to visit the MOSH (Museum of Science & History). A great museum for a various ages of kids.
This elevated monorail is FREE and runs frequently for a fun experience to cross over the river and explore Jacksonville from a different view. Information on times and their schedule, visit their website.
Main Street Food Truck Park
Although in Springfield (five minutes from downtown) we love playing here! Urban playground vibe with a slide and small swing set, cars to ride in and space to run around. You can buy a drink or eat something at the food truck they have featured.
Jumbo Shrimp Game
When you find yourself in downtown Jacksonville with kids during baseball season – I highly recommend a Jumbo Shrimp game – they are PERFECT for young children and everyone loves a minor league baseball game.
