Ever have a pinch me moment while traveling? Or a “how is this my life right now?!” Well, this last year I have been honored to have a quite a few of them. One most recent (and list topping) is that of Kaudulla National Park in Sri Lanka. My husband evenly gleefully shouted “this is better than any date I have seen on the Bachlorette!” Ha, take that abc….
In all seriousness, there are little words to describe seeing such beautiful creatures up close. We were able to (from the distance) observe and take photos of these massively beautiful animals. Seeing as words often don’t do some travel moments justice, I must share photos from my *pinch me* travel experience. Sri Lanka has 26 national parks, and I highly recommend you visit one (or two, or three). Besides possibly ruining zoos for me, I am so thankful I had this opportunity.
Quick info
Booking
We booked with a safari company that picks you up at your hotel in the area (a small fee applies depending how far away you are). They drive to where you are staying in a jeep, and take care of everything for you. It was the easiest outting to plan! They recommend the 2pm tour (which we did), but also have one at 5:30am.
Experience
Our overall safari was great. Whenever they saw us taking photos, they made sure to stop, and always had our safety in mind. We had originally booked with them to take us to Minneriya National Park that was closer to us, but they mentioned we would most likely see far more elephants a little bit farther at Kaudulla National Park. Depending on what season you go to (especially if you are going during dry season of July-October), I would look into their tours at Minneriya National Park. This park has the greatest gathering of Asian elephants in the world due to decreased water supplies in other parts of the country.
Price
For two adults the price was $95 and includes:
- Private Safari Jeep
- Professional Safari driver and Guide
- Kaudulla Park entrance Fee
- Kaudulla Park Service fee + Vat Tax
- Jeep Entrance Fee
- Hotel Pickup & Drop off
(Free from Minneriya & Habarana City area)
It was incredibly easy to book directly online and highly recommend them for your safari journey to Kaudulla National Park!
Now, onto heart gushing photos of baby elephants and wide green spaces along beautiful reservoirs.
The most magical moment of the whole evening, was towards the end, when it seemed we had the whole park to ourselves. Our drivers stopped on the muddy trail so we could snap a large herd of elephants at sunset and white birds flying about. My absolute favorite photos are of a mama and her baby, who (to my pleasant surprise) were close up to our jeep for the photo op. It began to rain, the sun was setting and I could not wipe the smile from my face. As you can tell by some of the photos, they seemed to match my emotions 😉
Love always, Katherine

April 14, 2018 at 1:08 pmHow absolutely incredible! I think anyone would be crazy to not have a smile on their face after a day like that. One of these days I will get around to seeing elephants in the wild. Such majestic creatures. I’m sure I’ll be smiling and crying at the same time. Thank you for sharing.
