Before moving to Jacksonville, I had no idea the amazing neighborhoods that awaited me to explore. Across the river from downtown, one historic neighborhood full of charm and incredible restaurants has become such a joy to live close to. There are many communities scattered through Jacksonville with cute main streets and great places to dine, and San Marco, Jacksonville is no exception. Some of my favorite spots for coffee and cocktails as well as a beautiful view of the Jacksonville skyline can all be found in this darling little area on the St. Johns River.

Where to eat, drink and grab coffee in San Marco, Jacksonville

Casual eats

  • Green Erth Bistro – This place was discovered thanks to the Jacksonville Food Tour we did in San Marco. Persian food that is both comforting and delicious. Perfect for a casual lunch or dinner and a little off the beaten path.
  • The Bearded Pig – Ideal place to sit outdoors and enjoy delicious BBQ food.
  • Juice Tap– The place to get your smoothie and acai fix (opening soon at their new San Marco location)!
  • High Tide Buritto Co.– Authentic Mexican mixed with beachy Florida flavors for a laid back lunch setting.
  • Fuji Sushi – Although not unique to San Marco, this place serves all you can eat sushi for lunch.

Less-casual eats

  • Town Hall – A nicer spot to have brunch or a nice dinner (entrees on the smaller side, get there early or make a reservation). A great option for cocktails and specially made mocktails as well.
  • Taverna – Perfect place if you want to enjoy quality Italian food at reasonable prices. They also have an excellent curated wine menu. Head there on the weekend for brunch or sit outside for a lunch or an early dinner.
  • Matthews – Still on my list to try (especially their happy hour), their upscale menu is a desirable fine dining spot. Choose from the not so average menu or book a reservation for their Chef’s Adventure Tasting menu.
  • Rue St. Marc – Perfect spot for a date night, or just for celebrating life or a special event. Great cocktails and an interesting menu (especially if you love French food).

Coffee

  • Good Dough – Doughnuts (including an amazing Fried chicken doughwhich) as well as local Vagabond coffee.
  • Bold Bean – Great place for coffee, to get work done and grab a pastry.
  • Southern Grounds – Coffee for the morning, wine for the evening with lunch and pastries in between.

Where to grab a drink in San Marco, Jacksonville

  • Grape & Grain Exchange – Perhaps on my list of favorite places to grab a cocktail in Jax. Speakeasy vibe in the back with a second bar and live music and great cocktails (or glass of wine).
  • The Posting House – Calm, cozy English-inspired vibe to grab one of their many beers on tap or their specially selected teas. They serve local Vagabond coffee here as well as light snacks.
  • Sidecar – House and classic cocktails of all kinds can be found here.

What to do in San Marco, Jacksonville

  • Take in the views near Friendship Fountain – Drive to Friendship Fountain along the St. Johns River and take in the skyline (hop on the water taxi if it’s running for some moments on the water).
  • Museum of Science & History – Visit the exhibits at MOSH (after you enjoy being near the water above).
  • Movie Theater – Check out what movies are playing for a rainy day.
  • Taste of Jacksonville Food Tour – Sample San Marco bites around the neighborhood while listening to history along the way. Great walking food tour. Read my blog post about my experience here.
  • Community Theater – Buy tickets to see a play at Florida’s longest continually running community theater!
  • Wick: A Candle Bar – Pour your very own soy wax candles with the many scents they have available – bring some wine to the store and enjoy it with a group!
  • Shops & Galleries – Walk along San Marco Square to pop in clothing boutiques, Industry West (furniture store), San Marco Books and More, as well as art galleries.

San Marco is a wonderful place to visit while in Jacksonville (or to enjoy as a local). The Art-Deco movie theater, various places to dine or have a drink or simply enjoy the charming views of the historic square or river.
