Once I saw that we would be driving through Olvera on our way to a weekend in Malaga, I knew we had to stop. Anytime you have a chance to make a morning drop by or afternoon lunch stop in a ‘pueblo blanco’ I highly recommend it! They have other-worldy quaintness and often times you can feel the slow Spain living. As a bonus, they often surrounded by beautiful mountains.
Olvera, Spain was far less crowded then other towns we have seen thus far in our travels. Additionally, it didn’t feel overwhelmed at all with tourists. Perhaps because it was a Friday, or that we were there earlier in the day.
An afternoon guide to Olvera, Spain
Most often parking in a small town is not easy. A parking garage a little out from the city is necessary, but in Olvera parking is pretty simple and you can park fairly close to all the sights! We parked here, and made our way to the castle. Here is how we spent a day trip to Olvera, Spain.
Visit the Olvera sign and church at La Plaza de Iglesia
Starting your day at La Plaza de Iglesia is ideal and a wonderful welcome. Enjoy the Olvera sign, take in the castle views, then head inside to purchase your tickets that admit you to the castle and museum. Unfortunately, The church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación was closed to visitors at the time – there was a bit of construction around the plaza. Seeing the beautiful monument and enjoying the plaza was still wonderful.
Climb the castle and visit the museum
The views of the church from the castle were astounding! As well as the mountain and village panoramas. The church is iconic to the town, and is a must see from above. After climbing and exploring the castle, head to the Cilla Museum and enjoy more views at Torre de la Cilla.
Head down to Calle Llana
Roaming through the small neighborhoods on our way to Calle Llana was such a treat. Gorgeous flowers still in bloom, pots hung on the white washed walls. Always in awe of the corners of these small Spanish towns.
In contrast, Calle Llana felt like a true downtown. It is the center of it all and more modern than those close quaint streets we had just walked through.
Lunch at La Tarara Neotaberna
A true delight to dine at this bistro. Although I almost want to go back for Sushi that isn’t served in the afternoons. The inside design was also impeccable. Situated on Calle Llana mentioned above, it was the perfect place to grab a bite. As a bonus, there were plenty of affordable plates.
Climb up to the Monumento al Sagrado Corazon
Take in a broader view of the town’s skyline (the church, the castle and white houses on the mountainside) and climb up to the monument. There is a wonderful lookout to see the area from a different view – you will be glad you made the climb up!
You only need a few hours in Olvera, and I am so glad we made it a stop on our way.
