After my solo travel tip with two kiddos, a few of you said this type of post would be beneficial. When I write on the topic of family travel, I always like to mention that you know your kids best. These are just suggestions that may work for you, too! Traveling with a toddler and infant is at times, exhausting – but we can always get by with some tips for what to bring. I truly hope this helps!
Traveling with a toddler and Infant: Transportation
Double Travel Stroller – This stroller has been great! I love that there is an option for an infant carseat, and your toddler can hop on and off. Once the baby can sit better unassisted, this the rear seat is also an option so they both can sit forward without a carseat. If I am wearing the baby, the stroller can hold all our bags and the carseat. Ideal when I was traveling solo.
I purchased mine on Facebook Marketplace and I encourage you to look there, first!
This may be the case with many double travel strollers, but it can be a little difficult to turn with one hand, but overall this works great for us.
Single Travel Stroller – We still use this and even more so now living in Europe. To pack lighter (when we don’t want to bring a double stroller) we use a carrier and this single. It is light and folds up small (you can even put it overhead on the plane).
Stroller bag – This fits the stroller with the sunshield off, as well as the separate carseat attachment for when we gate check the stroller.
Infant Carseat – Still using this carseat for our second baby and it has held up well. The carseat is also pretty light, which is so important! If you are looking for more baby travel items, I have this post.
3-in-1 Travel Carseat – We just ordered this light and narrow carseat (and had great reviews on safety). As always, do your own research for what is best for your family. This way even if we check it, it is a much lighter option than our everyday one.
Carseat cover – Another recent purchase, I got this size so it can fit our larger carseat and of course the infant one. It also can be worn as a backpack which is helpful. Put extra diapers in here too!
Car Seat Travel Belt – Although we haven’t used this yet, when we travel with numerous bags, this is where we may put the second carseat (if not on the stroller). Update – still have not used this, we rarely travel with two carseats (actually haven’t yet)!
Safe in the Seat has a great article for carseats and air travel, you can read here.
Wildbird Carrier – This replaced our Baby Bjorn carrier and I love how easy and simple it is to use. As an update, now that our baby is bigger I would switch back to the Baby Bjorn. The Wildbird doesn’t allow front-facing carrying (only face to face and then backpack). But perfect for smaller babies and super easy to use!
Some tips and products when traveling with a toddler and Infant: Sleep
When possible, we try to use a pack n’ play from family or friends when we get to our destination. You can also rent a crib from a hotel etc. Anything that we don’t need to bring when it comes to bigger items is a win.
With that said, here are some travel-friendly items for sleep. One thing to note, we often book a suite in a hotel or an Airbnb so we can have our own room (with lights on) when the little one’s go to sleep.
Pack n’ Play – We have only used this in the house or road trips, but it is super light, easy to use and these sheets go with it.
Monitor – We were in need of a second monitor, and I wanted one that did not need wifi for travel purposes. It was purchased with this mount so we can clip it anywhere.
Hushh Portable White Noise Machine – A staple, as many parents know.
Some tips and products when traveling with a toddler and Infant: Diaper Bag
Diaper Bag (LOVE this bag, great quality and machine washable)
- I pack diapers/wipes/snacks I need for the flight, and have extra (more than I need because you never know what delays you may have) in my bigger carry-on.
- Changing Pad – We have used our travel changing pad a ton, unfortunately the one we have is no longer sold. I recommend one you can easily wipe down and that is machine washable.
- Extra plastic bags for dirty diapers or clothes when you don’t have a trashcan near you (ideal for on the plane changes).
- Snacks – Can you ever have enough? This snack spinner is a fun way to serve their favorites (my toddler loves it).
- Clorox Wipes / Hand Wipes
Some tips and products when traveling with a toddler and Infant: Toddler Carry-on Bag
Although I wish he would carry it more (ha), it isn’t big to carry or put on the stroller.
Visit my traveling with a toddler blog post for details on the products below They are all great for on the plane or during a layover!
My formula is shaping up to be the tablet (always, and sometimes in our carry-on to make it lighter), crayons and paper and some small toys. I have a feeling this will be ever evolving….
Save this for later if you are traveling with a toddler and infant on your next adventure!
