Recently having moved to Jacksonville, I was incredibly eager to explore all the day and weekend trip possibilities. For obvious reasons, spending a weekend in Savannah was always pretty high on the list. The southern city is filled with so much history, multiple dining options and leaves you wanting to go back. I know this because I went for a long weekend, and I am already planning my next visit.

When visiting a city for the fist time, you always want to hit the hot spots, but I try to find hidden gems as well. This guide to a weekend in Savannah is for first timers or those who are looking to explore a little further. Living only a few hours south of this underrated city, I have a feeling there are more guides in the future.

A Quick Guide to a weekend in Savannah for First-Timers

Where to stay in Savannah

Perry Lane Hotel

When choosing where to stay for a weekend in Savannah, I hoped for a unique stay in the heart of downtown Savannah. In a city that is known for elegance along with deep history, I wanted where I laid my head every night to reflect that. The Perry Lane Hotel was the perfect choice from their rooftop pool and bar to complimentary drip coffee in the morning at their coffee bar off the lobby. Their hotel creates a “right at home” experience while spoiling you with special services, such as free bike rentals, a personal driver, and champagne upon check in.

Where to grab coffee during a weekend in Savannah

If you know me, you know my itinerary is usually built around what coffee spot I choose to start my day at. Savannah has plenty, and is one of the reasons I need to hurry back – there is so much more to the Savannah coffee scene I need to see.

  • Collins Quarter – You know I have a love for Aussie-style cafes and Collins Quarter is spot on. Order a flat white or their most well known – spiced lavender mocha.
  • Perc Coffee – A place you know will provide you with the best cup of coffee. They honor their farmers by roasting every batch to perfection. There is a flavor profile for everyone.
  • The Paris Market & Brocante – Step inside a two floor Parisian flea market filled with books, handmade jewelry, antiques and beyond. Their cafe was named “The most beautiful coffee shop in Georgia” by Architectural Digest. It lives up to it’s reputation with a gorgeous interior, complete with a chandelier hanging over a bench looking out to the streets. Here you can drink tea, coffee or, champagne.
  • The Coffee Fox – I only simply stepped inside the Coffee Fox, but this craft coffee house is right next to the Paris Market and on my list for next time!
  • Foxy Loxy Cafe – Also on my “must sip the next time I am in Savannah”, is The Coffee Fox’s flagship store – The Foxy Loxy Cafe in mid-town Savannah.

Where to eat and grab a drink during a weekend in Savannah

  • Peregrin – Checks off all the boxes you want when sipping on a cocktail. Great drinks, beautiful view of the city and a nice eclectic vibe complete with lawn games. The rooftop bar sits a top the Perry Lane Hotel, mentioned above.
  • The Collins Quarter – I can’t only keep Collins Quarter in the coffee category, because their brunch (and I am assuming their dinner) is sublime and lived up to the hype.
  • Cotton & Rye – Nice dinner spot with excellent dinner options and cocktails. I highly suggest their award winning wings, we couldn’t stop talking about them.
  • The Grey – Many people suggested this spot, and I am so glad I listened. From the ambiance, to the happy hour cocktails and oyster deals – you can’t go wrong with this place. Make a reservation for dinner or arrive for happy hour, first come first served.
  • Treylor Park – Unique twist on comfort food – I recommend the Triple P. If you live in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra also has a location.
  • The Olde Pink House – A classic and staple. You can have dinner and drinks inside the only 18th century mansion. Unfortunately, they recently had a fire and have been closed. Make sure to double check if they are open, and make a reservation.
  • Sandfly BBQ – New to the south, I am always game to try the cuisine, in this case BBQ. Any “best BBQ” search will lead you to Sandfly – set inside a converted railway car and located a short drive outside downtown.
  • Jen and Friends – Dessert martini bar full of instagram-worthy creations and delicious sweet cocktails!

What to do during a weekend in Savannah

  • Walk along Broughton street – The main hub of Savannah. Architecture, shopping, and a plethora of restaurants. I recommend Civvies for thrift treasures, and The Paris Market, mentioned above.
  • Savannah Bee Company – Try numerous samples from honey paired with cheese, lotion and a lot more. For $10 you can also do a mead tasting in the back, a perfect rainy or cold day activity. Find either location on Broughton or West River Street.
  • West River Street – One of the best things about Savannah is how easy it is to walk everywhere – the main street of Broughton Street is in close vicinity to West River. Walk along the water, grab some coffee or take a river cruise.
  • American Prohibition Museum – This museum doesn’t take too long to go through, is really interesting if you are unfamiliar with this time period AND it ends with a speak-easy where you can grab a drink. On Sundays, they can’t serve any alcohol so plan your weekend accordingly.
  • Georgia Tasting Room – Cozy wine tasting environment where you can also can grab a wine slushy to go because, open containers.
  • Explore on foot – The area near Georgia Tasting room (also by the museum) is another great place to walk around. Our favorites were A.T. Hun Art Gallery and Savannah’s Candy Kitchen. All the places I mentioned for things to do, can be reached on foot. You never know what you may find past the “top things to do” in the city.
