Heading to Sri Lanka, I was excited to uncover the lush country and eagerly wanted to escape the city. So unlike my usual self, I know. I hoped to explore past my comfort zone and immerse myself in a new place. With so much to see and outings to experience, it made choosing a location in the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka challenging. As one of the Choudary Group Hotels and Resorts, Zinc Journey Sigiriya promotes down to earth hospitality and strives to be authentic with all it does. They achieve both within 5 minutes of entering their space.
Check in
Checking in gives you insight into their amiability, love of their beautiful country, and desire to make you feel right at home. Is it weird to say that this may be my favorite “hotel check in” ever? When you arrive, you’re offered a delicious cumin/ginger drink and a single flower wrapped around your neck. Before being shown to your room, you are asked to participate in a Sri Lanka tradition by lighting the oil lamp in the lobby. I am still thankful for the opportunity to stay in such a culture enriched hotel.
We entered our room perfectly decorated for the jungle like atmosphere ready to unwind. A cozy bed, bathroom filled with all necessary amenities, and bottled waters were all part of our stay. The most charming part of our stay was our porch complete with wooden chairs perfect for gazing out to the grassy courtyard. Most noteworthy was the stunning view of Lion Rock set in the distance as monkeys play on the telephone wires close by. Easily the best reason to stay here is the proximity to Lion’s Rock. Waking up to the view of a World Heritage Sight was a highlight of staying there (and a reason alone).
Location
If you are hoping to travel to Polonnaruwa ruins, Elephant Nature Parks and Dambulla Caves, all can be reached from Zinc Journey Sigiriya. Most prime sightseeing spots are no more than an hour drive from your stay. With Lion Rock only being walking distance away, that alone saved us so much time! Situated close by to from Minneriya and Kuadalla Elephant Park, and twenty minutes from the Dambulla Caves – the location was ideal.
Restaurant
With an affordable, diverse and appetizing menu, we dined at Zinc Journey Sigiriya for every meal. Delicious curry spreads, soups and home cooked Sri Lankan meals with a Lion Lager awaited us after a day of sight seeing. Although we saw one or two cafes near the hotel, we loved exploring the menu during our 2 day stay. If you’re short on cash, it helps to book everything to your room that can be charged on your card.
Furthermore, wonderful reviews raved about the staff’s ability to assist in hiring a driver to the nearby sights. Because of this, nerves were set aside for transportation through Sri Lanka. The hotel employees assisted in drivers for our next destination to Kandy, and offered to help book our Elephant tour. Staying true to their mission, guests will have an authentic experience and plenty of help achieving the perfect Sri Lankan trip. With so many sights at our finger tips and the warm reception upon arriving to our second destination, we could not have chosen better!
Love always, Katherine
